In this guide to surfing etiquette, Surfer and Entrepreneur Colby Leachman is going to teach you how to follow the rules of the waves. Here’s to writing the unwritten rules of proper surf etiquette!

Who Has the Right of Way?
There aren’t any roundabouts or traffic lights out in the ocean. So how do surfers decide who has the right of way out on the waves? It’s simple, explains Surf’s Up Consulting Founder Colby Leachman: the surfer closest to the peak, where the waves are set to rush in. Remember to wait your turn and position yourself lower and closer to the beach when entering the line-up.
Is it Cool to Just Drop-In?
No way! Always remember: don’t drop-in on another surfer’s wave! If someone is already surfing a wave, keep your distance. Unless already discussed and perfectly planned, dropping in on another surfer’s wave will ruin the experience for that surfer. This is considered stealing the wave — which is a great way to be the least liked guy or gal out there for the day!
No Hogging the Waves
Even the greatest surfer alive is not free to hog the waves. This one should go without saying, but Colby Leachman reminds all surfers that you can’t catch all the waves on your own. Remember: you don’t own the ocean and neither does anyone else. Take your turn and give other surfers space to catch some waves of their own.
Good Vibes Only!
Another unwritten rule of surf etiquette that should really go without saying: good vibes only! That means have fun, communicate with other surfers and be mindful of the beach, boards and everyone around you. Mistakes happen and that’s okay. Just remember to apologize when things do go wrong. Be mindful of your surroundings: don’t ditch your board! You should never release your board under any circumstances; this could lead to injury-filled accidents.
